Sultanahmet at Golden Hour: Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque & Topkapı

Hagia Sophia

For nearly a thousand years the largest cathedral in the world, later a mosque, then a museum, and today a mosque again — Hagia Sophia carries the whole history of the city under one vast dome. Arrive early to stand beneath it in relative quiet.

The Blue Mosque

Across the square, the Sultan Ahmed Mosque answers with six minarets and a cascade of domes, its interior lined with the blue İznik tiles that give it its name. Visiting hours pause around prayer times, so check before you go and dress modestly.

Topkapı Palace

Home to Ottoman sultans for four centuries, Topkapı spreads across courtyards, gardens and terraces overlooking the Bosphorus. Give it a couple of unhurried hours, and don't miss the views from the palace edge.

The best light

Come at golden hour, when the low sun warms the stone and the crowds thin. Early morning offers the same soft light with even more space to yourself.
